Loreto, Peru.– At the facilities of CORPI San Lorenzo, in the province of Datem del Marañón, a pivotal meeting for strengthening the organizational processes of Amazonian Indigenous Peoples is taking place from March 1–3: the analysis and approval of the institutional governance process of the Sacred Headwaters Alliance in Peru.
This gathering brings together Indigenous representatives who are members of the Alliance, with the active participation of the Autonomous Territorial Governments of the Datem in the northern Peruvian Amazon. These governments have been consolidating their model of self-governance grounded in self-determination, territorial defense, and the comprehensive management of their natural assets.
The session was opened by our leaders: Uyunkar Domingo Peas, Wrays Pérez, Jorge Pérez, and Guillermo Sundi, who emphasized that Indigenous Peoples and Nations must have the necessary tools to strengthen their governance systems and reaffirm their communal identity.
The presence of Zenaida Yasacama, Executive Director of the Sacred Headwaters Foundation, is especially noteworthy. She is providing guidance throughout this process of institutional evaluation and consolidation, contributing her experience in territorial articulation and Indigenous governance at the Amazon-wide level. Lolita Piyahuaje, founding member of our Alliance, is also participating, reaffirming the bioregional and unifying character of this initiative, which brings together Peoples of Peru and Ecuador in the defense of rivers, forests, and life.
The meeting also addresses the need to improve collective representation, ensure organizational continuity, and consolidate Indigenous-led mechanisms for territorial defense in the face of extractive pressures, the proliferation of illegal economies, and the various threats confronting Amazonian Peoples.
From Datem del Marañón, the Autonomous Territorial Governments deliberate and reach agreements with a forward-looking vision. Autonomy is not improvised here; it is built with determination, unity, and historical memory.
